The food, done by MF Events NYC, was as decedent as one might imagine. In fact, it went beyond that, it was utterly divine. A Valentine’s theme ran through the menu which began with a salad of radicchio, hearts (get it?) of palm, and ruby grapefruit. Following this, the modelesque servers brought out filet mignon on silver platters and began to dramatically carve them with enormous knives. The meat was so tender it could have been singing “Rolling In The Deep” to me.

The party circuit was replete this week with third-, fourth- and fifth-generation heirs of John D. Rockefeller, none of them busier than David Rockefeller. One of ”the brothers,” as the third generation is called, Mr. Rockefeller served as co-chairman with his wife, Peggy, of Monday’s benefit dinner-dance for the Center for Inter-American Relations. The scene was Rutherford House, on Second Avenue at 14th Street, a 19th-century mansion owned by the caterer Mark Fahrer. The festivities included a formal dinner for 60, Lee Roy Reams belting out numbers from ”42d Street” and speeches likening the honoree to Peter the Great.
Last night SOLIFESTYLE stopped by the opening of Big Lobby Art, an exhibit featuring larger than life artwork curated by Streetwater and presented at Openhouse Gallery. Even before we stepped in the door of the Soho space, we were blown away by the scale of some of the works on display which ranged from spiraling wooden sculptures to psychedelic paintings of piranhas.
The caterer, Mark Fahrer, spent a month in Morocco this summer, and everything was authentic from the gigantic white tent to the silver platters for the couscous. And let’s not forget the two camels, which, despite their current residence in New Jersey, looked considerably more graceful sinking to the floor than did the guests.
With all the uncertainty outside, the idea of spending an evening inside, at home among friends, has never seemed more appealing. And yet many of us have essentially canceled our social lives. By Sam Goldman, The StillRoom In 1994 I was Executive Chef with M. Fahrer Caterers in New York and we were catering the first anniversary of the Food Channel. Their TV chefs were too busy to actually cook, so we were provided with recipes from each of the hosts.
Mr. Babich and Ms. Andrada met as students at New York University and sometimes refer to themselves as “the Yugoslavian guy and the Filipino girl.” Their reception was culturally mixed, as well. A disk jockey played music by Deee-Lite, the Clash and Madonna, while everyone ate a Filipino-Mediterranean-French dinner catered by Mark Fahrer.
When Mark Fahrer, a caterer, moved his company from Union Square to 391 Second Avenue (23rd Street), he was able to include a small cafe, where he will serve tapas-style portions of his food, mostly hors d’oeuvres like beef negimaki, chicken satay and mini crab cakes.
Starting last week and culminating in a frenzy of Christmas party-giving this week, New York businesses are using caterers such as Mark Fahrer to regale their employees and clients at their own offices and in clubs, private halls and lofts – or, as Mr. Fahrer sums it up, ”you ring, we bring.”
Built in 1859 by a couple who ran a boarding school there, the stately three-story structure at 236 Second Avenue, near 15th Street, served as a private home for a succession of merchants, as a nursery school and as the headquarters for the Jewish Ministers Cantors Association. Mark Fahrer, a professional chef, has signed a long-term lease on the property and plans to reopen it in the fall as a catering and party facility.
